Prop betting became such a boon for NFL books and bettors that they naturally eased right into the college game. Individual props on NCAA college football players are largely reserved for marquee TV showdowns, rivalry games, bowls, and the playoffs.

But you can also find props on teams, such as wagering Over/Under on how many points Michigan will score on Michigan State, which team will have more rushing yards, who will score first, and the Over/Under on how many total points will be scored in the first half.

Why Use Free College Football Prop Picks

Prop bets are fun, adding interest from many who wouldn't have watched the game in the first place. Props are also an opportunity for those of us who are more interested in counting money than rooting for a favorite team.

An annual college football rivalry battle may have the correct side and total posted, but various props open up avenues to softer numbers and winning tickets. Gathering free college football picks from professionals will help you spot wagering edges you may have missed.

Make sure you follow my CFB consensus picks and CFB computer picks each week during the college football season.

Betting Value in Free College Football Prop Picks

Some soft prop odds are actually easy to recognize. Many times a team's star running back with have a rushing yards prop, such as Over/Under 120.5 yards. The number is largely based on his season average versus the defense he will be facing.

Good college football running backs don't see many elite defenses so they can pile up impressive yardage numbers. But how do they fare against strong defenses? Did they face any elite defenses last year? That gives a better indication of how good the back is.

If he averages 125 yards per game overall but against the two best defenses he faced he ran for 59 and 62 yards, plus just 3.5 yards per carry, he's not an elite back who might make it to the NFL. And he probably won't come close to going Over 120.5 prop yards against the elite defense he's about to face.

How To Win With Free College Football Prop Picks

The same way you find value with any odds: read, analyze, and think. Make your own prop numbers after an examination of the data.

  • Will this offense be able to go Over 31.5 points against a Top 10 defense?
  • Is this quarterback likely to throw for over 290 yards?
  • Or will he throw far less because the game plan will probably be run-oriented or 50/50 between the run and the pass?
  • Does the defense have a history of double-teaming the opposing player's best receiver?
  • Is this offense very good in the red zone or too conservative?

Free College Football Prop Picks Betting Strategy

Passing Teams vs. Suspect Secondaries

The Air-Raid Offense is becoming more common in NCAA college football. So if a team that passes the pigskin all day long is facing an opponent with a lack of skill position talent in the secondary, the quarterback has a strong chance to throw for a lot of yards and the offense has a chance to surpass its scoring average.

It helps the passing team if the weather is good or the game is indoors. But if the forecast calls for cold and 15 MPH winds, you may have to look at the Under props or pass. Passing on props can also be a wagering strategy - money not lost is money still in your bankroll.

NFL Talent at Running Back

There are plenty of college football running backs that roll up impressive stats. They can be very good, the offensive line is outstanding, or the coaching staff prefers a run-heavy attack. However, there are only a handful of these same running backs who are talented enough to play in the NFL. A lot of running backs that pile up great college stats can suddenly have a terrible game when facing elite defenses.

A true NFL talent at running back won't. Carefully examine how a running back fared against the few great defenses he faced, even going back to last season or previous college football bowl appearances. Prop bets on star backs can be 150-to-190 Over/Under yards, but they can be shut down badly against great defenses offering excellent UNDER the total prop opportunities.

Condense the Card

With so many NCAA college football games on the Saturday card, it can be wise to narrow the card down to a number of games to focus your study time. The same is true for props. There can be so many props available that you don't have to examine them all. Focus on teams or conferences that you're familiar with.

For instance, narrow things down around one prop, such as "This Team Will Score Over/Under X Number of Points". Examine how that team matches up against the opposing defense, how they've played against comparable teams, or how that team's offense differs when they're at home to on the road.
