Sports betting trends are team patterns that develop over time, derived from stats and historical data. A team on a 9-2 spread run is playing better than expected and has been undervalued by oddsmakers. Something is probably happening with a WNBA team that has gone on a 10-3 run UNDER the total over the last 13 games. Either their defense has improved, or the offense is struggling. It could also be nothing at all. A WNBA betting trend can be a statistical anomaly. Think of betting trends as most useful by helping point handicappers in the right direction.

WNBA Handicapping Puzzle

The trend is your friend? Not always. Betting trends are only one piece of a larger handicapping puzzle. Stats may imply that a WNBA team is above average, but if they're on a 6-7 spread run, the trend doesn't tell you much. Trends work best when something stands out, so a handicapper can identify the underlying reasons. The defending champion Liberty started the 2025 campaign 12-5 straight-up but 6-10-1 ATS. They were winning but not covering. Digging deeper, an experienced handicapper would recognize that defending champs are often overvalued by oddsmakers. In addition, their starting center was injured, missing all of June and most of July. Those were two sound reasons to explain the lack of covers. A sound WNBA betting strategy involving trends needs to include more, such as statistical analysis, WNBA matchups, injuries, and team tendencies.

WNBA Underdog Betting Trends

There are two ways to win when betting on underdogs. If a +6 dog wins the game, you cash a winning ticket. If the underdog loses the game but covers the point spread, you win. The average bettor leans towards favorites, while experienced bettors recognize the value of dogs. Narrowing how teams perform as underdogs is another way to extract incisive handicapping information. A WNBA team may play half of its games as an underdog, but how do they perform in that role? Trends will appear. For instance, a team may lose 14 in a row as an underdog but go 10-4 ATS. There are likely reasons why, such as a fine coach who motivates them to keep hustling, or they play great defense that keeps things close.

WNBA Home vs. Road Trends

Teams can be world beaters at home, then look like the worst team in the league on the road. It happens all the time, in the WNBA and every other sport. At home, players have a short trip to the stadium after spending the previous few days at home, comfortable in their usual surroundings. The hometown fans are cheering for them to play well. On the road, players have to deal with airports, plane rides, bus trips, changing time zones, and practicing in unfamiliar facilities. Sleep patterns can get disrupted, and that's if they can get any sleep at all. There are many challenges for professional athletes on the road that can disrupt focus and performance. Analyzing betting trends with home/road play helps bettors identify which teams handle road play well and those that come unglued.

WNBA Money Volume

Trends can also refer to the WNBA public betting splits – the volume of bets and money wagered on different sides of a particular outcome. This can be revealing with totals. The average bettor prefers to wager on the OVER, rooting for high-scoring games. Professional bettors, however, have no problem pulling the trigger on backing the UNDER. When WNBA totals are moving down, that trend is a sign that sharp, big-money players have pounced on a soft number. It can pay by looking at sportsbooks that haven't moved the total yet, getting an UNDER wager in before the downward movement continues.

WNBA Totals

Totals are not as popular as sides with the average bettor, but they are with professional handicappers. Oddsmakers can make a reasonably accurate number on a WNBA side but be off by 5-7 points on a total. Pro bettors wouldn't hesitate to take advantage and pounce on the value. Totals are evident in streaks. When guard Kelsey Plum joined Los Angeles in 2025, she upgraded the offense, with the Sparks one of the best offenses in the league. They started the season with a 10-3 OVER the total trend. Digging deeper, they were also a poor defensive team. Despite oddsmakers adjusting the total, it wasn't enough as the trend continued, stretching to a 20-7 run OVER. A trend on its own is interesting, but not sufficient to warrant a wager. A trend supported by multiple reasons, however, is justification to take the rubber band off the betting bankroll.

Cautionary Trends

Time is one of the downsides of trends. Too small a sample size can be misleading, pointing handicappers in a fruitless direction. If a WNBA team fails to cover five straight times, that doesn't always mean they're overvalued or that players are battling injuries that aren't publicly known. They could just as easily cover the next five games and be 5-5 ATS over a 10-game span, revealing no trend at all. Larger sample sizes are better at revealing patterns that can lead to potentially valuable handicapping information. A coach who excels at getting his squad to play intense defense may have a trend of 45-30 UNDER the total as he takes over a new team. An astute handicapper would be on the lookout for overvalued totals. Trends + Reasons = Valuable Handicapping Areas to Examine.

One of Many Tools for WNBA Handicappers

Betting trends can be a valuable tool for anyone wagering on sports. How a team performs in the role of underdog, home/road, and totals provide a roadmap to point handicappers in the right direction. Trends by themselves aren't enough to predict what might happen tonight, as correlation doesn't equal causation. Trends are one piece of the handicapping puzzle that reveals patterns and team tendencies, and when used correctly, they can be your betting friend.
