The average sports bettor prefers to wager on the favorite or high-scoring games when making their WNBA bets. But professional bettors who put the time into researching matchups and odds learn to see the many advantages attached to live underdogs. Backing underdogs offers flexibility. You win the wager if the dog loses the game but covers the number or wins the game straight up. How many times have you backed a double-digit favorite only to see the entire game be close from start to finish? You can sense you have a losing ticket from the first quarter. It's even more nerve-wracking if you bet a big favorite on the WNBA moneyline and the game is tied late in the fourth quarter or in the eighth inning of a 2-2 baseball game.

Why Use Free WNBA Basketball Underdog Picks

Underdog upsets and point spread covers happen all the time. During one recent WNBA season, Chicago had the best record in the league but a losing spread mark. They won 26 games and lost 10, losing nine of those as a favorite. That included losses as double-digit chalk to New York (98-91) and Dallas (84-78). They tied Las Vegas for the most wins and Vegas had a spread cover record of just 24-23. The oddsmakers are no dummies. They know their craft and do an excellent job of posting numbers to try and get equal action on both sides. But they're far from perfect. Savvy handicappers who put in the effort can identify and exploit the softer numbers and situations to beat the books on a regular basis.

Betting Value in Free WNBA Underdog Picks

Betting numbers are constantly changing as money comes in. When too many below-average bettors move a number, even a few points, that opens up value for sophisticated bettors. In addition, odds are made largely on statistics, such as overall scoring and home/road averages. However, situations are an important element that often trumps stats. A weak WNBA team playing four straight home contests can be an underdog in all of those games. But the fact that they're on a nice homestand gives them some advantages, especially if the visiting teams are on long road trips, are dealing with key injuries, or have "look-ahead" bigger games on deck. Rivalry, revenge, and conference games can mean more to teams, as well. Not all betting numbers or situations are alike. Also make sure you check out where the WNBA betting public is leaning when it comes to the favorite or underdog.

Two keys to winning at sports wagering are to put in the effort and know the numbers. Numbers refer to the team and player stats, as well as the posted oddsmaker lines. I'm constantly following line movement to calculate the mathematical edges at the wagering window. I also put in the work dissecting team strengths, weaknesses, matchups, and WNBA situations on the court. I have over two decades of experience that has sharpened my eye along with a comprehensive computer database. If my numbers find a team should be a +130 underdog and they're actually +160, there's more value present. The WNBA basketball underdog selections that I release are examined from different angles with multiple wagering reasons attached.

How To Win With Free WNBA Underdog Picks

Many novice bettors focus on such bets as moneyline favorites or WNBA parlays for larger payouts while steering clear of underdogs. But since the invention of the point spread, underdogs have just as good a chance to cover as the favored chalk. Established bettors recognize the value in underdogs. They have no fear of backing dogs to cover or even win the game when the stats or situations line up. In addition, identifying a few key variables that work against the favorite often means the underdog probably should have been made the favorite. And finding the right plus-money underdogs to back on the moneyline will help build your betting bankroll faster than trying too many parlays.

How a WNBA Team is Playing Now

Team changes happen constantly with personnel, chemistry, or streaks. A team can begin to play well after a coach replaces an ineffective starter with a former role player. Or, a team can go from hot to cold because of a few minor injuries. Team defense can improve dramatically if an effective defensive force is added or the players begin grasping the system better. Sports fans and oddsmakers are often a few weeks behind in recognizing these changes. That's why a successful sports handicapper keeps daily tabs on changes and performance. The Minnesota Lynx started one season 0-4 SU/ATS before tweaking the lineup, including a rookie making her first start. They covered five of the next six with wins over Washington (80-78) as a +8 underdog and twice over Los Angeles as dogs of +1.5 and +5.5. It's less about how a team's overall record is and more about how they've been playing lately.

WNBA Defensive Dogs

The offense will come and go as it's about touch, rhythm, and moving without the basketball. But defense can be a constant as it's about hustle and intensity. Some coaches are better than others at teaching and demanding tough defense. Teams that are good or above-average at defense have an edge when in the role of underdog. Hard-nosed defense can help keep teams in the game, which is an important factor for bettors when backing underdogs. You don't need the team to win the game, just to keep it close and cover the number. One season, Atlanta had a losing record, including 6-12 on the road, but was one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA ranked fifth in points allowed. Atlanta began the season 7-4 SU/ATS winning five times as an underdog. When the season ended, 10 of their 14 victories were in the role of underdog, including a 92-76 rout of Las Vegas as a +13 dog!

Correlated Parlays

A straight bet is picking one team to cover one number. A parlay is multiple wagers tied into one bet. The parlay payout is bigger, though it's much harder to hit. As a general rule, stick to straight bets most of the time. A correlated parlay is when factors mesh that gives a mathematical edge to two or more picks winning on the same game. For instance, if a strong defensive team is an underdog, you have deduced that they can cover the game because it will be a low-scoring defensive duel. You can back the underdog on a straight bet, plus parlay the dog with the game going Under the total. That's a correlated parlay - the dog has a good chance to keep it close behind their strong defense, so let's add the total to a parlay anticipating a low-scoring final. The Atlanta Dream in the previous example that started 7-4 SU/ATS winning five times as an underdog, also went 8-4 Under the total. Not surprisingly, those five wins as a dog all sailed Under the total. Parlays shouldn't be about guessing or hoping multiple wagers win. There should be concrete reasons behind making a parlay.
