The NBA playoffs are a step up from the regular season, weaker squads are out of the picture and the upper-echelon teams take center court. The stars will shine, although teamwork—and team defense—are still difference-makers in NBA championship basketball action.
With marquee matchups and TV showdowns, the NBA playoffs are a great time of the season for bettors to make NBA picks. Here are some things worth considering for sports betting on the NBA playoffs.
Pro Tip: How to bet on the NBA
Ups and Downs of NBA Playoff Betting
NBA basketball is often about ebbs and flows. The home team starts hot, leading 14-6, but the visitors get into a groove on a 20-10 run to take the lead. The coach calls a timeout, inserts a defensive specialist, and the scoring slows. Then the opposing coach counters with a small lineup, the pace quickens, and no one seems to miss a shot. A playoff series can also be like that, with home court being a significant advantage or one team playing with great intensity after an embarrassing blowout.
Successful bettors know that these hot and cold surges on the court are a normal part of the NBA playoffs. They react calmly, knowing that a poor performance in Game 1 of a series doesn't mean they'll play as badly in Game 2.
Zig-Zag
An NBA team bouncing back after a playoff loss is a popular system known as the "zig-zag." It's easy to understand the reasoning. Many playoff series are expected to be competitive, especially in later rounds. If two decent or evenly matched teams play a game decided by double-digits, look at the box score. What happened? The team that won might have shot 52% while the team that lost had a shooting night below their season average. Other things will stand out, too, such as the star player of the losing team having an off night shooting. The losing team may have turned it over 17 times when they're usually careful with the basketball. They're less likely to play that poorly two games in a row, just as the star is unlikely to shoot 5-of-17 again. Finally, a team may have lost Game 4 or 6 badly on the road, but they're coming home for Game 5 or 7 in front of their home fans. Home court could be just the ticket to zig-zag from a poor effort to a strong all-around one.
Situations Matter
Losing an NBA playoff game can pay dividends in the next game. It's difficult to pinpoint a universal why, but there will be reasons. A good team can have a subpar game, but they're too good to keep struggling for another four quarters. Other times, a team will turn it up a notch down 2-1 in a series, or a coach will make adjustments from the previous game that pay off by surprising or disrupting the opponent.
For NBA betting, the situation matters. Over a 24-year stretch, NBA playoff teams off a loss went 559-538 against the spread, a slight advantage. Home teams off a loss have a better cover percentage at 316-287 ATS. NBA road teams off a road loss are just 146-169 ATS, while teams off a loss of three points or more have the better track record of covering at 273-241 ATS.
Taking the situation into account, is one factor in helping me find the best plays and beating the point spread.
NBA Postseason Defense Shines
It's not often you see teams in the Eastern and Western Conference Finals with defensive weaknesses. Teams that are soft on defense in certain areas usually get knocked out of the playoffs at some point. Playoff basketball brings out defensive intensity, a plus for totals players. In a content betting analysis studying totals of over a thousand postseason games, NBA playoff teams following a loss go 564-526 UNDER the total in the next game. In that sample, NBA home teams off a playoff loss go 322-278 UNDER. In addition, NBA home teams off a playoff loss by three points or more go 272-238 UNDER the total. There are a lot of NBA playoff matchups and NBA betting trends that find patterns for games with lower scoring than the betting makers expect. And there are reasons for this, with teams capable of playing strong defense and NBA playoff coaches demanding it.
NBA Playoff First-Half Odds Betting
Wagering on the first half can be advantageous. For example, there will be playoff underdogs with decent starting units, but they lack depth. Examine games against top-level opponents to see if they keep things close or even lead at the half, but wear down in the fourth quarter, where a shortage of depth can get exposed. In addition, betting NBA Playoff games UNDER the first-half total can be a better play than the entire game. If both teams have above-average defenses or one prefers to slow the pace down, that can help predict the likelihood of a low-scoring first-half total. Betting on the first half UNDER also reduces the chances of getting burned by overtime.
Game 7 Showdown!
There's nothing like the excitement of an NBA winner-take-all Game 7. This is where home court provides an edge with the passionate fans cheering their team on. That is evident not only in home teams winning more Game 7s straight up, but also in covering the number. In 65 Game 7s spanning almost 30 years, home teams went 37-27-1 against the spread. Defense is another element that shines when the whole season comes down to one game. Since 2020, the Boston Celtics have played in five Game 7s, and all five stayed UNDER the total. One was a 92-87 game versus Toronto, and in another against Milwaukee, the total was bet down from 209 to 206, and the UNDER still cashed easily in a 109-81 final.
Beyond the Scoreboard
Betting on the 2025 NBA playoffs can be fun and profitable if you assess the sportsbook betting odds carefully to find the best opportunities. The NBA betting window has ups and downs, just as there are ebbs and flows in any basketball battle. Matchups are critical, and situational handicapping, such as a losing team that might be primed for a zig-zag bounce-back, presents an excellent chance for profit. I run down every wagering variety the books offer while planning my attack. When the side or total is sharp, player props and first-half bets can be a winning ticket. I'm also cautious about regular-season offensive stats, as NBA playoff defense can step up several notches. Upper-echelon NBA teams will be squaring off, leaving weaker teams in the dust.
