Berger's best skill and the most important skill at TPC River Highlands are the same thing. He ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach to the green this season, and River Highlands rewards approach play more than any other discipline in the game. This is a par-70 Pete Dye layout that plays under 6,850 yards, which means birdie volume comes from iron execution, not driver distance. Berger has been one of the most accurate iron players in the field all season, ranking in the top six in greens in regulation, and he brings that profile to the venue most likely to reward it. Echavarria won the Cognizant Classic in March and has a quality long-iron game, so he's not a forgettable opponent. But the gap in approach-game credentials between these two on a course specifically designed to reward iron play is the clearest edge on this card. Berger's one vulnerability is the putter, and the greens here will test it. The counter to that concern is proximity: when you're hitting this many greens from this close, you need fewer putts per round to stay ahead. Take Berger as my Golf Game of the Month.
