Central Michigan at New Mexico

New Mexico closed last season at 9-4 under Jason Eck with a defense that held opponents to just over 22 points per game and an offense that scored a respectable 27 points per game without ever looking like an explosive unit. Central Michigan brings a similar profile under Matt Drinkall, an offense that averaged under 23 points per game a year ago and a defense that gave up right around 23.5, numbers that don't point toward either side turning this into a track meet. Central Michigan's season ended on a rough note too, managing just a single touchdown in a bowl loss to Northwestern, the kind of performance that raises real questions about how quickly that offense finds a rhythm against a New Mexico defense that's been solid for two years running. Neither team is walking in with the kind of firepower that forces the other to simply try to keep pace, and two competent, unspectacular defenses meeting two moderate offenses is a good recipe for a total that stays under wraps. The betting market has leaned toward the UNDER here as well, with the bigger money sitting on that side. I'm on the UNDER tonight.
