Chicago Sky vs New York Liberty Point Spread Picks

Chicago is 15-24 and well under .500, and I'm not going to pretend New York's 23-16 mark doesn't say something real about the gap between these two teams. But New York just posted a season-low 60 points in a loss to Golden State that completed a season sweep, and the Liberty still don't have Satou Sabally, out for a tenth straight game, or Leonie Fiebich. Chicago is banged up too, missing Skylar Diggins for a seventh straight game and DiJonai Carrington, and now down Rickea Jackson for the year with a torn ACL. Even with all of that, the Sky have already beaten this Liberty team once this season, a 93-86 win earlier this month after dropping the first two meetings by a single point apiece. New York is favored again, but I don't trust a number this big from a team that just posted its worst offensive output of the year and has already lost to this same Chicago group once. Getting a healthy cushion of points with a Chicago team that has played the Liberty tough all year is the number I want here. Chicago is the play on the spread this afternoon.

Chicago is 9-17 and dealing with its own absences: Skylar Diggins and DiJonai Carrington are both out, and Rickea Jackson is done for the season, so this isn't a healthy underdog stealing a number from a full-strength favorite. It's two shorthanded rosters, and the number has come off its opener toward Chicago since the market opened, with smart money showing up on the Sky's price too. New York still has the deeper roster on talent, but talent hasn't been the story for this Liberty team in weeks. Chicago is the right side tonight.

New York rolls into Chicago as the hottest team in the league, 10-4 and coming off a 22-point home beatdown of Washington. They're the class of the East right now. None of that changes what double figures mean on the road in this league. Chicago has sat for nearly a week and gets to play fresh in front of its home crowd, while New York may be shorthanded: Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is questionable with a knee issue, thinning the backcourt that sets its pace. This isn't a case for the Sky winning. Their defense leaks badly, third-worst in the league at 86.3 points allowed a night. It's a case about the number. Laying double digits on the road is a tax most favorites can't pay every night, and a rested home dog tends to land at least one run that keeps the back door open.
