Every bettor knows home teams win more often, and those bettors are right. NFL home teams won 55.1% of their games from 2015 through 2025. College football home teams won 58.6% over the same stretch. Nobody disputes any of that.

There is a second question sitting behind it, and every bettor asks it: what does the sportsbook charge you for backing the side that wins more often? Having a sense of the answer is not the same as having counted it, and counting it takes a database of closing prices rather than an opinion. 

I went and measured that across more than 125,000 home games in the NFL, the NBA, college football, college basketball, and the WNBA, with the football numbers running from 2008 forward. Backing the home team against the spread lost money in all five, and the road side was better in all five. That is not a quirk of one league. It is the same answer in five competitions that have almost nothing in common besides a point spread.

🏟️ Winning more games and being a good bet are different things

Two ideas get merged together here, and they need separating.

The first is home field advantage itself. The crowd, the travel, the familiar surface, and the referee who leans a fraction of a percent the wrong way all belong to it, and it is real. It shows up in raw win rates in every sport I have looked at.

The second is what the market does about it. A sportsbook does not offer you home teams at even money. It hands the road team points, and that number is the book's estimate of what the home edge is worth. Get the estimate right, and both sides cost a bettor the same thing: the book's commission and nothing more. Make it generous to the home side, and you lose extra every time you take it. 

Against the spread just means betting a team with those points attached rather than betting it to win outright. It is where this question gets settled, because it is the only market that puts an explicit price on the home edge.

So the question was never whether home teams win. It is whether the points the book gives away are worth more or less than the advantage they are paying for.

📉 Five sports, and the same answer in every one

Here is what I mean by a blind bet: backing one side every single time it came up, with no handicapping applied and no opinion about the two teams. It is the starting position before anybody does any work, and it is the only fair way to compare two bets.

I ran the home side and the road side blind, in every sport where a point spread exists, going back through my closing-price database. Neutral-site games are excluded throughout, because a neutral site has no home team to measure.

Those are five different leagues, each with its own set of oddsmakers setting the numbers. The home side lost between 4.86% and 6.83% of every dollar risked. The road side lost between 1.51% and 3.53%. Both sides lose money because both sides pay the commission, and that is exactly what a blind bet is supposed to look like. What matters is the distance between the two columns, and it runs the same direction five times out of five.

That distance is smallest in the WNBA, where the home side gave up 1.33% more of every dollar than the road side, and largest in the NFL at 5.32%.

College basketball carries 76,794 home games on its own, which makes it the single largest contributor in the set. The WNBA carries 4,460, which is why I lean on its number the least.

One sport breaks the pattern, and it does so in a different market. In baseball, the home side is the better moneyline bet, returning −2.25% against −3.12% for the road side. So this is a finding about spreads, not a blanket instruction to fade home teams everywhere.

🏈 The NFL priced a real decline almost perfectly

Home field in the NFL genuinely shrank, and the market's response is the most instructive thing I have found on this subject.

Split the last two decades in half. From 2004 through 2014, NFL home teams won 57.4% of their games. From 2015 through 2025, they won 55.1%. That is a real decline, and it is the one that gets written about every autumn.

Now the part nobody writes about. Over the same span, the average NFL home line moved from −2.6 to −1.9. The market gave back roughly the same amount the advantage lost.

The effect on a bettor was nothing at all. Backing NFL home teams against the spread returned −6.9% in the first era and −6.7% in the second. Two decades of genuine change in the sport, correctly tracked by the people setting the numbers, and the return to somebody betting it blind did not move.

That is what an efficient market looks like from the inside, and it is why "home field is declining" is a fact about football rather than a betting angle. By the time you have read about it, the line has already moved to account for it.

🔇 2020 removed the crowd, then removed the building

That season handed everyone the experiment nobody could have run on purpose, and it came in two versions.

The clean one is the NFL. Teams played in their own stadiums, with travel and routine unchanged, in front of almost nobody. That isolates the crowd and holds the rest still. Raw home advantage fell 1.2 percentage points, and against the spread, NFL home teams actually covered better in 2020 than in either 2019 or 2021. College football tells a similar story, with a 3.8-point fall in raw home advantage and a 49.59% home cover rate that sits above the seasons on either side of it.

The NBA is the version people quote and the one to handle carefully. The shutdown cut its season in half and finished it inside a single Florida complex, so those games had no crowd, no travel, no home locker room, and no familiar rim. Raw home advantage fell six percentage points, but the bubble removed the whole bundle at once, so that six tells you nothing about crowds specifically.

What the bubble gives you instead is better than what it took away. Every game of the 2020 NBA playoffs was played on a neutral floor, and every one still had a designated home team with a line posted against it. So oddsmakers had to price a home court that didn't exist.

They priced it. The average home line in those playoffs was −2.6, against −3.46 across the five postseasons that followed once crowds were back in the buildings. Nearly a full point came off, for exactly the thing that had gone missing.

And the bettor finished where he started. Home teams covered 51.11% in the bubble against 51.89% in those later postseasons. Ninety games is too few to call that a difference, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. The average line is the half of this that holds up, because it averages ninety-one posted numbers rather than ninety-one coin flips, and it moved the way it should have.

🏟️ There is no such thing as a great home-field team, not for betting

The intuition is strong, but it doesn't survive testing.

It seems obvious that some venues are worth more than others. Altitude is real, and so is a long flight the day before a game into a building that genuinely rattles a visiting quarterback. Published power ratings assign different home-field values to different programs on exactly that reasoning, and the reasoning is sound.

So I tested it in college football two ways, and it failed both.

The direct test took the 124 teams with at least 60 home games and asked whether the spread of their home performances was wider than chance alone would produce. It was not. The variation came in at 1.680 points of cover margin against a chance expectation of 1.594, which lands at p = 0.203. Shuffle the results at random, and you would see a spread this wide about one time in five.

The second test walked a popular published tiering system forward across 2,204 team-seasons. Teams rated as the strongest home venues covered 47.85% at home. Teams rated the weakest covered 50.31%. The gradient ran backwards, and it was not statistically significant in either direction, which makes it noise rather than an inverted edge worth betting.

It's worth knowing why it fails, because it will save you from building the same thing. Those tiers are built partly on how often a team wins at home, and how often a team wins at home mostly measures how good the team is. The top tier was 13-point home favorites on average, and the bottom tier was 3-point home dogs. The rating measured team quality while wearing a home-field label.

The cleanest version of the test kills it outright. Trailing home cover rate already has team quality divided out, and its correlation with next season's home cover rate is +0.021 across 2,107 team-seasons. Last season's home record tells you nothing whatsoever about next season's.

🎯 What I do with this

None of this says a home team is unbackable. It says the starting position is worse there, and how much worse is a choice you make before you handicap anything.

Start from the road side and make the home team earn it. The distance between those two columns is a head start you are either giving away or taking, and it is settled before you have looked at a single matchup.

A home favorite in a close game is the spot that should need the most convincing. That is the classic trap, and it traps people precisely because the reasoning behind it feels so solid.

The venue angle is the one to stop hunting. No leaderboard of great home-field teams exists to exploit, and a system built on one is fitting noise.

Keep the size of all this in proportion, though. A blind edge of a few percent is worth having, and it is nowhere near enough on its own, which is why the edge a handicapper has to clear is its own subject. A losing run inside a sound approach is still normal rather than a signal, which is what variance does to a record over a season.
