Miami has won six games by an average of 34.5 points, the widest margin in the FBS, and its 48.5 points-per-game lead all 138 teams. Miami is unbeaten and first in the AP poll, and Pittsburgh has lost two straight, 21-17 to North Carolina at home and 27-21 at Boston College. Pittsburgh averaged 38.4 points in the five games Mason Heintschel played at quarterback. He is out for the season with a torn ACL, and the offense scored 17 and 21 in the two games since. Miami allows 14 points a game, tied for seventh-fewest, and held five of its six opponents to 20 or fewer. Miami needed two overtimes to beat Florida State 43-35 last Saturday and won its other five games by 13 or more. Pittsburgh has scored 19 a game since losing its quarterback and faces a defense that allows 14, so Miami should win. Denver lost its opener 96-84 at Oklahoma City on Thursday and turned the ball over 22 times. Denver never had more than 20 turnovers in any of its 82 games last season, when it averaged 12.2 a game, third-fewest in the NBA, and led the league in scoring at 122.1. Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon are back from that team, though Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown and Peyton Watson, who played 29% of its minutes, are gone. I expect the turnovers to fall back toward 12, which is about 10 more possessions to score with. Through two games each, Oklahoma City allows 94 points a game, the fewest in the league, and New Orleans allows 121.5, the seventh-most. Denver scored 84 against the league’s stingiest defense and should score well above that against one of its worst. Home teams won 55% of NBA games last season, and Denver is home tonight for the first time this season. Fewer turnovers, a weaker defense, and home court all point to Denver. Miami at -1150 and Denver at -426 cost too much to lay alone. Combine them into a two-team parlay and the price is -292. I’m on that parlay.
