SMU is 5-1 and ranked 23rd in the AP poll, and Cal is 3-4 with a scoring margin of minus 3.9 points per game, 106th in the FBS. Cal has scored 24 or fewer in four of its seven games, including 10 against Clemson and 7 in a 41-7 loss to Wake Forest, and it allows 27.7 points a game, 104th. SMU has allowed 24 or fewer in five of its six games, the exception a 41-31 loss at Louisville on September 19. Cal beat SMU 38-35 last November behind 330 passing yards and four touchdowns from Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who left the UNLV game on October 3 with a concussion and missed the Virginia Tech win. Jackson Brousseau started against Wake Forest, and Sagapolutele relieved him. SMU scores 32.7 points a game, 46th in the FBS, against a Cal defense that allows 27.7, and Cal scores 23.9, 100th, against an SMU defense that allows 21.3, so SMU should win. Cleveland lost its opener 114-106 at Philadelphia on Thursday with 21 turnovers and 24% shooting from three, and Donovan Mitchell still scored 32. The Cavaliers led 69-45 at halftime and were outscored 69-37 after the break. Cleveland had 21 or more turnovers in 3 of its 82 games last season, when it averaged 13.3, and Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen are back, so I expect the turnovers to come down. Brooklyn lost its opener 110-103 at home to Charlotte with 22 turnovers. Julius Randle scored 33, and Michael Porter Jr. scored 26, which is 59 of Brooklyn’s 103 points, and no one else on the Nets scored more than nine. Cleveland won 52 games last season, and Brooklyn won 20, the third-fewest in the league, though both rosters changed. A Cleveland team likely to protect the ball is at home tonight against a Brooklyn team that turned it over 22 times and got most of its points from two players, so Cleveland should win. SMU at -1011 and Cleveland at -488 cost too much to lay by themselves. Combine them and the two-team parlay is -309, which is the play.
