Game 1 didn't go the way we needed it to, and it's worth a brief look before moving on. Carolina came in having allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of their previous 13 playoff games — a defense that had been suffocating all spring. Tuesday was a different story: three separate lead changes, turnovers in the defensive zone that became goals, and Frederik Andersen allowing five on 23 shots after an extended layoff. That's not a tendency. It's a one-night perfect storm, and the market hasn't fully adjusted for it heading into Game 2.

The version of this team that takes the ice Thursday will not look like Tuesday's. Andersen has done this before — after allowing five in Game 1 against Montreal in the Eastern Conference Final, he reset hard, locked it back down, and eventually closed out the series with a shutout. He came into this series ranked first among all playoff goalies in save percentage, and one chaotic night doesn't rewrite that. The defensive structure that made Carolina nearly impenetrable all spring hasn't changed. What happened in Game 1 was the floor of what this team is capable of.

The structural edges remain intact. Carolina's penalty kill is operating above 92%, tops among teams still playing, and they've surrendered just four power-play goals the entire postseason. Vegas has a dangerous man advantage, but the Hurricanes are built to limit those opportunities — and punish them when they do give them up. Brind'Amour teams don't panic. They respond. Going down 0-2 at home is not something this group will accept.

Carolina is priced as a short favorite in Game 2. The bounce-back data is there. The goaltending history says Game 1 was an outlier. The defensive identity is real, and it will reassert itself on Thursday. Andersen locks it down, the Canes look like themselves again, and Carolina wins Game 2.
