Pittsburgh was picked to finish last in the Metropolitan Division, but the Penguins pulled off an underdog win on opening night, defeating the New York Rangers 3-0 with Arturs Silovs stopping 25 shots. Tristan Jarry will be in net tonight for the Penguins after going 16-12-6 with a 3.12 goals-against average in 2024-25. The Islanders will open their season with Ilya Sorokin, who finished 30-24-6 with a 2.71 GAA last season. New York traded top scorer Brock Nelson to Colorado late last season, but it still has a top line consisting of Bo Horvat (28 goals, 57 points), Anders Lee (29 goals), and Kyle Palmieri (24 goals), although Lee may be out for this game.
