San Diego Padres vs Tampa Bay Rays Betting Picks

I had this exact game last night and watched San Diego blow a three-run lead in the seventh, Tampa Bay answering back to steal it in the final innings. That loss says more about a shaky bullpen inning than it does about the Padres themselves, and I'm not walking away from this series because of it. Robbie Ray gets the ball today off three straight starts of two earned runs or fewer, exactly the kind of length that keeps last night's bullpen mess out of the equation. Drew Rasmussen counters for the Rays with a strong season overall, but his last time out was his worst of the stretch, five innings and five runs allowed to Toronto. Tampa Bay is the better team in the standings and I understand why the board has them favored at home, but the price on San Diego reflects more fear than form off one bad bullpen inning. I had San Diego's moneyline earlier this week against Pittsburgh, and the Padres cashed as the favorite. Today they're the price on the road against a Tampa Bay team that has been one of the better clubs in baseball, and I still like the number. Walker Buehler has quietly turned his season around: he's posted a 1.50 ERA in two of his last three starts and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any outing since the start of August. Nick Martinez gets the ball for the Rays, and he was sharp his last time out, a scoreless outing against Baltimore, but that followed a disaster start against Toronto where he allowed six runs and didn't make it out of the fourth inning. That kind of swing has defined his season more than the ERA lets on. San Diego is ten games over .500 and enters off a win of its own, and getting +120 on a team throwing the more consistent version of its starter feels like the number is in my favor. Tampa Bay ends a six-game road trip. The offense is tied for 14th in runs scored. They've lost all five starts made by Zack Littell (5.28 ERA), including getting outscored 10-3 in his two road starts. San Diego's offense is ninth in the majors in on-base percentage, 12th in slugging, and 10th in steals. The Padres are 12-3 at home and play their third straight at home. Starter Randy Vasquez has a 0.82 ERA at home after having a 3.24 ERA in 41+ innings here last season. The bullpen is No. 1 in ERA (1.61), so back home field. Play San Diego. 

San Diego lost just its second home game of the season to fall to 12-2 at Petco Park, but the Padres will get an opportunity to bounce back against the Rays and Ryan Pepiot, who allowed seven runs on 10 hits in nine innings against them in 2024. Tampa Bay has lost three of Pepiot's five starts this season. Dylan Cease had one bad outing against the Athletics, but the Padres have won his other four starts, including 3-2 over Houston on Sunday when he allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. San Diego is 4-0 in Cease's past four starts after scoring two or fewer runs in their previous game. The Rays have lost Pepiot's past four starts as underdogs, and they have stayed UNDER in his five appearances.
