Baltimore is closing out its home schedule today, and this doubleheader opener looks like the kind of spot my numbers keep flagging. The Orioles won their last game and sit 5-5 over their last ten. Chris Bassitt gets the call, and the right-hander is 4-1 in his last seven starts, striking out 35 over 40.2 innings. Toronto counters with Max Scherzer, and I won't step around it: across his workload this year, he's been outstanding, a 1.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 38 and two-thirds innings. But it's a limited sample for a 41-year-old working through a scattered season. The O's are -130 on the moneyline and projected as the better team. What the number really says: Baltimore is favored to win this game outright, and the market still lets me take the Orioles giving up a run and a half at plus money. That gap between what a team projects to do and what the runline pays is the situation my model hunts, and it cashes at a rate few plays on my card can touch. Despite the mathematical improbability of either team catching a piece of the final AL wild-card spot, two division rivals at this stage are still playing to win, and Baltimore's bullpen depth gets the better of this one. The O's are 32-23 at home vs. AL foes on the runline this year, and I'm laying the run and a half today as my MLB Game of the Week.
