The New York Mets looked like they were going to be a championship team. The pitching was outstanding, but then suddenly everything came tumbling down. The team we saw over the first third of the season vanished, and they have been mediocre since. They have a slim 1.5 game lead for the final wild card spot, and they may not even make the playoffs. The Padres are on a different path as they started slow and put themselves in position to be a wild-card winner in the NL. They hold a 4-game lead for the second wild-card spot.
