Miami's flipped from playoff contention to a franchise disaster in a matter of weeks, and Sunday's finish against San Diego punctuated it: a blown three-run lead in the eighth stretched the skid to 12 straight, a new franchise record that broke the previous mark of 11, last hit back in 2011. I won't pretend that's a good look, and I won't pretend Zack Wheeler is walking into a soft matchup either — he's 10-2 with a 2.08 ERA over his last nine starts, as complete a run as any arm in the league is riding right now. But Sunday's game showed real life in this lineup, not surrender: Kyle Stowers doubled and went deep, and Miami had a lead in the eighth before the bullpen let it slip. We had this same series on the total two nights ago, and it cashed, proof the pitching staff can still hold a number even while a slump drags on. Miami is a .495 team by record, not a bad one, and as an underdog this season the Marlins have won close to four times in ten, comfortably clearing what a plus-165 price needs to pay off.
