Miami at Kansas City

Miami sits right at .500 on the year, and Kansas City has actually won eight of its last ten games, a stretch that looks at odds with a 62-76 record overall. But that surge has come without much help from the pitching staff: Kansas City ranks 28th in the majors in team ERA and 25th in runs allowed per game, marks that haven't moved much even during the hot streak. Randy Dobnak has been the exception, a 1.92 ERA that's carried real weight, but he's topped five innings just twice in his last five turns, which hands the ball to a bullpen that's been part of the problem all season. Tyler Phillips takes the mound for Miami with a 3.59 ERA and got through his last time out against Boston clean, four and two-thirds innings, one run allowed. The Marlins rank tenth in the league in team ERA and tenth in runs allowed per game, a deeper and more reliable staff than Kansas City's from top to bottom, and that gap is worth more than a run and a half laid at plus money. Miami is the more complete team on the mound, and it wins this one on the runline tonight.
