Cleveland at Miami

We caught Miami's Eury Pérez in a wild 9-8 win over Oakland five days ago, and that ace-plus-power formula has been the story of the Marlins' summer: 24-8 since the start of June, the best record in baseball over that stretch, a team nobody circled as a contender in May. Tonight, the Marlins hand the ball to Sandy Alcantara, solid at 4.00 but a step below the version that won a Cy Young, and Cleveland counters with its best arm. Parker Messick has been the Guardians' answer all year, a 2.80 ERA and an All-Star nod that's more earned than given, a lefty who limits hard contact and rarely beats himself. That's the matchup that matters here: Miami's heat is real, but the hottest team in baseball still has to face the best pitcher on the mound tonight, and Messick gives Cleveland every chance to keep this within a run or two even against a lineup that's been mashing.
