(# 4) Philomatt - Gelding made initial start at very difficult debut distance of seven furlongs. She was given time off after that race by the sharp John Kimmel outfit. Returned on this surface equipped with lasix and ran fine second from tricky rail post position. Has an impressive four furlong drill since that Dec. 30 six-furlong race. Stretches out today to a mile and seventy yards and any move forward will make him very tough to beat. Mike Smith and Kimmel have been quite successful over the years.

(# 6) Doesn't Lie - Trainer Perkins, been on his usual good winter roll at Aqueduct. After first try in slop at Monmouth blinkers went on and colt was bet heavily in his next pair at the Meadowlands. Ran second in small field (four horses), then had wide journey in swiftly run affair, finishing fourth. Has a fine work on Jan. 11 leading into this. This is the horse to beat.
