McCarty arrives at Birkdale still building his major résumé, but the substance is there. He led early at Quail Hollow this spring with an 8-under 63 built on a hot putter, backed it up with a top-10 at the Truist, and made it inside the top five through 36 holes in his Masters debut. That's a player comfortable with pressure, not a name filling out the field. Kim, by contrast, is a plus putter who's spent much of this season fighting his tee-to-green game, and while his runner-up finish at the Valero was a nice reminder of the ceiling, the inconsistency that has capped his last several seasons hasn't gone away. Birkdale's tightened landing areas punish loose ball-striking before the putter ever gets a chance to bail anyone out, which works against Kim's profile more than McCarty's. I like the number here: McCarty is priced as a near coin-flip against a player with real swing questions, and the rookie's recent finishes suggest he's not intimidated by the moment. This is a case of the market pricing reputation over form. McCarty is the play this morning.
