Rickie Fowler quietly put together a clean week at Travelers, shooting under par in all four rounds and making the cut for the eleventh time in sixteen starts this season. That kind of week-in, week-out reliability tracks with where he ranks on Tour: top quartile in driving accuracy, total putting, and bogey avoidance, the exact profile that holds up on a birdie-heavy course like TPC Deere Run, where he's already carded a top-20 finish. Jordan Spieth's résumé at this event is far bigger, with two wins here and top-10 finishes in three of his last four trips to Silvis. But that history belongs to a different version of Spieth than the one showing up right now. He missed the cut at the Memorial, limped to a T-56 at the U.S. Open, and finished 66th out of 72 players last week at Travelers, a stretch that has nothing to do with course fit and everything to do with a game that isn't holding together for four rounds. I'd rather back the player who's making cuts and shooting under par than bet on nostalgia carrying a slump-riddled Spieth back to form this soon. Fowler is the play here.
