Tulane at Duke

Tulane just lost the coach who got the program to a College Football Playoff appearance, with Jon Sumrall gone and Will Hall stepping up from within the staff to run his first season as a head coach. That's a real transition even with some continuity in the building, and a debut like that on the road against a favored opponent tends to produce a more careful, ball-control approach than the wide-open version of Tulane that scored 29 points a game a year ago. Duke enters off a 9-5 season under Manny Diaz that ended with a bowl win, and as the favorite here, the incentive is to play a clean, possession-based game against a team adjusting to new leadership rather than opening up the playbook and inviting mistakes in Week 1. Both programs scored well last season, but that production was shaped by circumstances different from those on the field this weekend, with one team breaking in a new head coach and the other protecting a favorite's role in its own opener. Season-opening favorites in spots like this have a track record of winning comfortably without a shootout, and that path keeps the total more in check than last year's numbers alone suggest. The UNDER is the play.
