Mid Tenn State Blue Raiders vs Old Dominion Monarchs Point Spread Picks

Middle Tennessee has rebounded from a rough start to the season and won three of its last four, including a blowout 50-10 victory over Florida International on Saturday while holding the Panthers 67 yards rushing and 88 passing yards. Nicholas Vattiato completed 20 of 24 for 147 yards and two TDs with no picks for the Blue Raiders and Martell Pettaway carried 11 times for 95 yards. Old Dominion previously suffered a five-game losing streak before winning its last three games, including 30-16 over Florida Atlantic last week. Blake Watson had 23 carries for 163 yards for the Monarchs, who are 0-4 ATS the last four meetings. The Blue Raiders are 9-4 ATS their last 13 November games and they have covered their last four home contests. Middle Tennessee has been a bit perplexing. They brought back eight offensive players, including a six-year QB in Brent Stockstill that has now passed for over 10,000 yards and thrown 90 TDs, but the offense isn't scoring. A lot of that has to do with injuries to Stockstill that saw him go from over 1,000 yards as a freshman and never getting there again. What this team has done is tighten things up defensively, allowing no more than 24 points in any of their last four games. Old Dominion is remembered for 49 against Virginia Tech, but this team has produced multiple turnovers in five games this season, including each of the last three slowing the offense. Middle Tennessee lost a heartbreaker in triple overtime last week to Western Kentucky, but the Blue Raiders have had an extra day to prepare for this matchup with plenty of motivation as Bowl game eligibility is on the line. MTSU has a big edge defensively as it is ranked #31 in the country in yards allowed (353.4 per game) compared to #80 Old Dominion (413.3 ppg). Also, the Blue Raiders have accumulated at least 400 total yards of offense each of their last three games and Old Dominion gives up 30.8 points per game. The Monarchs have won three in a row, however, that followed a six-game losing streak in which they allowed an average of 44 points.  MTSU quarterback Brent Stockstill completed 58.7 percent of his passes for 294 yards and a touchdown against Western Kentucky and Tavares Thomas ran for 92 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns. The Monarchs are 0-4 ATS against teams with losing records and 7-15-1 ATS their last 23 games following an ATS loss.  The Blue Raiders have covered the spread five of their last six games after a loss. The Old Dominion Monarchs did not even have a football program for longer than most have been alive. The program was started up again in 2007 after a long dormancy, and were ready to play in 2009. They went 17-5 in their first two seasons. They followed that with a 21-5 mark over the next two years, and made two straight appearances in the FCS playoffs, and completed an 8-4 season last year. They have made the jump to the FBS in very short order. They have a potent offense, and it has translated well on this level as they rank #39 with 467.5 yards per game. They have played very well at home throughout their new history. Middle Tennessee has yet to win on the road this season as they are allowing 35.5 points per game. Against a competent offense and a strong home field advantage, they will be in trouble in this one. The Blue Raiders have had a lot of recent struggles on the road as they are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven roadies. Old Dominion should at the very least come up with another home win.
