The Michigan State program after thriving for several years has really fallen down. The Spartans are just 10-21-2 over the last three years and prospects are not high for this season. The problem has been the offense has averaged exactly 20 points per game over the last 3 years. Those numbers drop to 18.4 points per game in conference play. The defense has helped them stay in games but not enough to cover the brutal offense. Northwestern has become competitive in the Big-10 because of an outstanding defense which was their best in team history a year ago allowing just 15.9 points per game. While they have to replace some key players the defense remains the team's calling card. This is the opener where the defenses tend to be better than the offenses as timing is sometimes an issue. This should be a defensive struggle and I will make the play on the UNDER.

Northwestern has won three of the last four meetings outright, including last year's overtime thriller. The Wildcats come off a heartbreaking 20-17 loss to Michigan in which they led 17-0, but couldn't score again. The game went UNDER by nearly 10 points. Clayton Thorson went 16-of-27 for 174 yards for Northwestern, which couldn't establish much on the ground. It was the defense that kept the game close and that will have to be the case again this week as Michigan State leads the nation in rushing defense. The Spartans' toughest opponent this season was at Arizona State and they lost 16-13 with only 63 rushing yards on 2.3 yards per carry. MSU defeated Central Michigan 31-20 on Saturday after jumping out to a 31-3 lead. Brian Lewerke finished 16-of-25 for 185 yards with no touchdowns and an interception for the Spartans.
