South Carolina State got thumped by Louisville in the opener. However, this is a strong program under coach Erik Martin, having won 20 games last season. South Carolina State was second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in points allowed (70.4 per game), in shooting percentage (.441), and in defending beyond the arc (.310). Samford shot 41% in its opener, losing at Tulane. They have a new coach in Lennie Acuff, and of the 15-man roster, only two played for Samford last season.
