DePaul won the season opener 78-72 over Robert Morris as Eli Cain, who was on the All-Freshman team in the Big East last season, scored 21 points and Tre'Darius McCallum added 12 points and eight rebounds. Coach Dave Leitao is rebuilding this program and has a lot of young talent to help improve on a 9-22 season in 2015-16. Rutgers defeated Drexel 87-66 with Jonathan Laurent and Nigel Johnson scoring 15 points each and DeShawn Freeman adding 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Scarlet Knights have a new coach in Steve Pikiell and he has a big job ahead of him as the Knights struggled last year and finished 7-25.
