Adam Wainwright has given St. Louis at least six innings in eight of his last nine starts. In his last three outings, the right-hander has given up just four runs and 11 hits in 20 innings. Wainwright pitched seven shutout innings against Houston on Wednesday before the bullpen blew the game in a 4-1 loss and he gave up three runs in six innings in his only appearance against the Cubs this season. Chicago has lost Jason Hammel's last two starts although he pitched well enough to win in a 5-4 loss at Washington when he gave up just one run in seven innings. St. Louis hitters have a combined .853 OPS against Hammel, who has a 6.04 ERA against the Cardinals the last three years. The Cardinals have a .813 OPS against right-handers this season, which is second-best in the major leagues. They have also won six road games in a row, including last night's 3-2 win.
