(#'s 1 and 1A) PICK OFF AND WEB GEM - Both of these runners debuted in early August. Both are by Fusaichi Pegasus. Decent tries in their first runs. They have worked well since, and Zito is 19% with second-time starters. Web Gem was heavily backed in his first outing.

(# 8) Saada - He had some trouble in debut when he hit the gate at the start. Still got involved in the running, and eventually finished fourth. Excellent work since, and he is the horse the Zito entry must fear.

(# 5) And A Gentleman - Toner traditionally doesn't have his horses cranked to win early. Off some fine works, this horse ran better in debut than it looks. Lukewarm at the windows, he raced greenly and wide. Winner won by almost eight, so he wasn't far off the board. Comes back quickly, and has an interim work.

(# 3) Golden Weekend - Debuts for the Carlos Martin barn off several works that indicate ability is there. Barn not known for first-out success, but that may be offset by the presence of Prado aboard. Combination is 10 for their last 40 together.
