LOSS

This is a tough spot for the visitors. Cleveland has used its bullpen a lot to win six straight playoff games to take a 3-0 lead in this series. Pushing the bullpen envelope didn't help yesterday in a 5-1 loss, allowing nine hits and four walks to a talented Toronto offense. The Indians used three relievers, throwing 18, 15 and 26 pitches for Game 4 and they had a bullpen that threw 128 pitches to record 25 outs in Game 3. All of that is a concern today as the Indians go with 24-year-old Ryan Merritt, who will become the second pitcher in major-league history to start a playoff game after making just one regular-season start in his career. He has a fastball that strains to register 90 mph, one career big league start and has allowed more hits than innings pitched in the minors over the last two years. This pitching staff faces a Toronto offense that was ninth in baseball in runs scored, sixth in on-base percentage and #12 in slugging. The Blue Jays are 51-25 when their opponent scores two or fewer runs in their previous game. Toronto goes with veteran Marco Estrada (1.65 ERA), who has allowed three runs in 16 postseason innings, with one walk and 12 Ks. The Blue Jays are 10-4 when Estrada faces a team with a winning record and the home team holds all the cards. Play Toronto.
