Edinson Volquez has pitched reasonably well for the Reds, but he has definitely had control issues that have led to his self-destruction on the season. Volquez has issued 28 free passes in 43 innings and ultimately, that will catch up to you in the long run. Josh Geer's numbers are deceptive as the right hander has made four starts, and one bad one has inflated his numbers to make the picture a bit gloomy. Geer, in three of those four starts, has worked 21 innings allowing just six runs, for a 2.57 ERA and unlike Volquez, in two of the starts he has walked no one. Geer made his debut last September and made five starts all resulting in two runs or less, so he has definitely pitched well with a high rate of frequency. Volquez’ tendency to lose control vs. Geer who has made seven of nine major league starts highly productive, offers tremendous value on the runline here. The Padres get the call on the runline in this one.
