Football picksOctober 12, 2012

The New York Giants have been one of the most up and down teams in the NFL this season. They looked horrible in week one against the Cowboys. They then turned around and won a couple of games, even blowing out Carolina on a Thursday night road date. The Giants had to come back to beat Cleveland last week, and they certainly did not look great. Ahmad Bradshaw was awesome, but he really needed to be. With Hakeem Nicks out, the Giants really lack the offensive horsepower that Eli Manning is used to having around him.

So what will they do this week when they travel across the country to face off against the San Francisco 49ers. The San Francisco team has been great this season. They went into Green Bay and won a big game there. Last week, they looked good again. The 49ers dominated Buffalo at home. The interesting thing that we see with San Francisco this year is the offense. They have scored a lot of points and the passing game has looked better than last year. Perhaps the boys from the Bay have gotten around on the Jim Harbaugh offense a little bit more.

This week, San Francisco is a relatively large favorite. They are a 6.5 point favorite at most books. In the NFL, it is difficult to cover as a touchdown favorite. Most of the time, these lines come when teams have a massive disparity in talent. Most people would say that there is no big difference in talent on these two teams. So why is the line so high? It might have something to do with the long travel for the Giants. It might also have to do with how well the 49ers have played at home this season.

The betting public seems to be backing the Giants in this game. That has to be a scary thing for any person who supports the New York side. When the public backs a road underdog, it often loses out. People who expect the 49ers to win would like to see more of this Giants backing. San Francisco has the defense to force Eli Manning into mistakes. They also have a revenge factor in mind after New York won in San Francisco last season. Look for these factors to play out in a very interesting game on Sunday afternoon.

Football picksOctober 12, 2012

The Cowboys head up to Baltimore this week to face a Ravens team that figures itself among the best in all of football. The Cowboys are off of a bye week and they come into this game as a 3.5 point underdog. If they are going to overcome that handicap, they will need to play much better football. Last time we saw Dallas, they were turning the ball over and getting stomped by the Chicago Bears. Can they turn it around against another team that makes its living by forcing a bunch of turnovers.

What ails Dallas? Are they even that good? That is the question that many people are asking after watching them play the Bears. Tony Romo continues to throw the ball to the other team. They are fumbling the ball away, too. This is a major problem that will stop you from winning games in the NFL. The Dallas defense has also looked very suspect. Chicago exploited Dallas through the air, as Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall went up and down the field. Baltimore has a good passing game and can beat the Cowboys deep with Torrey Smith if they want to go that route.

When you look at Baltimore this year, you see a team that is up and down. They looked rough one week ago at Kansas City, winning by a field goal against a poor Kansas City club. The Ravens also struggled two weeks ago against Cleveland in a game many people think they should have won. Some people don’t have a lot of confidence in the Ravens to come out strong in this game. They do have the weapons on offense and defense to overwhelm the Cowboys, though. If the Ravens play their best game, they will run over the Cowboys in Baltimore.

The bookmakers believe this game will be a close one. They believe that the Ravens will have a hard time running away with this game. That might be true, since the Cowboys have played a lot better on the road this year than they have at home. They have gone into New York and dominated a good Giants team. What will you get out of Dallas this week? Your guess is as good as mine. If the Cowboys play well, they can upset the Ravens. That is going to be a real chore on the road, though.
