The SEC had a number of really good games last week. This week, there is one marquee game on tap. The South Carolina Gamecocks and LSU Tigers had very different results in week six. South Carolina destroyed Georgia at home, running out to a 28-0 lead in the first few minutes. The LSU Tigers struggled in Gainesville, losing to a good Florida team on the strength of a bad second half. Now the two teams head to Baton Rouge, where the Gamecocks will look to shake their road struggles. The Tigers are pegged as three point favorites in this game.
For South Carolina, the primary question in this game is a simple one. Can they play as well on the road as they have at home? South Carolina has destroyed both Missouri and Georgia at home, but they have struggled on the road. The Gamecocks nearly to Vanderbilt on the road in week one. And they trailed at halftime at Kentucky a couple of weeks ago. They have a very difficult task going into Tiger Stadium. If they continue to struggle on the road, they will have a very difficult time winning in one of football’s most difficult venues.
LSU will need to bounce back after an uninspiring performance. The Tigers had hopes of an undefeated season, but the truth is that their goals are all still on the table. If LSU can run the table, they will have a great chance to play for the BCS championship. That all starts with a big win over South Carolina. LSU has struggled a lot with their offense. They must play better on that side of the ball if they are going to score against South Carolina. LSU has struggled in the last three weeks, hitting more field goals than touchdowns.
This game will come down to poise. If South Carolina can remain poised throughout the night, they have a great chance to get out of LSU with a win. This is no easy task, though. Chances are the Gamecocks will look very different than they looked last week. If LSU can feed off of the home crowd, they can create turnovers and score some easy points. That will be the goal as the Tigers look to get their season back on track. They rarely lose at home under Les Miles, so that is something to keep in mind.
