The Virginia Tech Hokies and Virginia Cavaliers have not played a meaningful game in a long time. That will change on Saturday, as the Hokies head to Charlottesville to play the Cavs in a game that will decide the ACC’s Coastal division. To say that Mike London’s UVA squad has overachieved would be a massive understatement. No one expected UVA to do anything and they are in position to make a splash. They have already knocked off Georgia Tech, Florida State, and Miami this season. Can they take down the rival Hokies and complete the dream? That is the tough question.

The books have pegged this one strangely. The Hokies opened as six point favorites. Since then, they have been bet down to a four point number. Lots of sharp money seems to have flown in on the Cavs, with the public generally backing the Hokies. So what does this mean for us as we make our college football picks this week? It means that you need to give the Cavaliers a hard look. You need to determine just why the line is moving this way. Virginia has a really good team up front and it is built to stop teams like Virginia Tech. This is why the line is moving the way that it is.

Virginia has been built for struggles like this. With a strong offensive line, a strong defense, and a couple of good running backs, the Cavs are surprisingly solid. They don’t make too many mistakes and they have some playmakers on the outside, too. If you want to make good college football picks this week, then you will give them a look. All year, people have been doubting Virginia. All year, the Cavs have gone out and proved those people wrong, often as big underdogs. They will look to do it one more time on Saturday.

Virginia Tech has looked vulnerable this season. They dropped a game at home against Clemson and looked poor on the road in a few spots. Virginia has a good chance to win this game and at the very least, they should be right there looking to cover a number that is just too big.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has had a strange year. Losing to only LSU and still with a chance to play in the National Championship game, Alabama is on top of the world. Now, they have to go to Auburn to play a game on the plains. Can they keep up good intensity and close out a solid season? Or will Auburn rise up at home and put up a fight against the Tide? If you are looking to handicap this game, then you need to think long and hard about the emotions at play. Alabama lost a close game after dominating the first half against Auburn last year.

In any other scenario, this might be a sleepwalk game for Alabama. They are on the road against a team that has been bad for the better part of the year. They will know their SEC championship fate after the Arkansas/LSU game on Friday afternoon. So can they get up to face Auburn? Two things say yes. For one, this is one of the most intense rivalries that you will find in college football picks. The Iron Bowl brings out the best in Alabama and Auburn and it is unlikely that either team will fail to prepare. The second factor is Nick Saban. He is a monster and tends to prepare his team well in all circumstances.

Auburn has some major problems stopping the run. They have been torched by pedestrian offenses this year and have been buried by the good offenses. They have made a habit of losing by big numbers to almost every good team on their schedule this year. How they are ranked is a mystery. Alabama can run the ball with the best of them. Expect the Tide to lean on Trent Richardson and pound the football down Auburn’s throat. The 21 point spread might seem like a lot, but it truly is not in this instance. Alabama will shut down Auburn and run out to a big lead, coasting to the finish. Don’t take the bait here.

NFL Picks  – New England Patriots at Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are the most difficult team to pin down in the NFL. Just when you think they are skunked, they come back and surprise you. This happened last week, as the Eagles were without Vick and other stars. They went into New York and took down the Giants, winning a close game. Who would have seen that coming? Most people will tell you that the Eagles have no shot at beating the Patriots this weekend, but who can really say with this bunch? The Eagles are getting 3.5 points at home in a game that should be competitive. They might make a nice pick this week.

The issue for Philly is health. If Vick is healthy and their receivers are good to go, then they do have the weapons to attack New England. If Vick is not healthy, then it will be much more of a struggle. Still, Philly has played good defense over the last few weeks. They shut down New York last week in a game that they had no business winning. New England has looked vulnerable over the last little bit, so this might be a good spot for them to slip up again. On the road, they struggled against Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago.

If you like the Eagles here, then you will want to wait for more injury confirmation. There is no good in making NFL picks only to find out that you made picks with poor information. Make sure that you hear whether De’Sean Jackson is healthy before pulling the trigger. The Eagles do have a chance to be competitive in this game and they could win it outright. Playing at home in a game that they must have, this seems like a good chance to take a chance on Philly. Be careful, though, as betting against New England and Tom Brady is always a difficult position to be in for those people making NFL picks.

Chicago Bears at Oakland Raiders NFL Picks

The Chicago Bears and the Oakland Raiders face off in a pivotal cross-sectional struggle this week. The Bears have been good this season, but they are another team that will be looking to survive despite the loss of a starting QB. Jay Cutler got hurt last week and will be out for at least a few weeks. This is going to be a huge problem for a Chicago team that has needed Cutler’s play over the last few weeks. Oakland is tough and they play well at home, so this could be a challenge for this Chicago team. As 4-point road underdogs, they will look to hang tough for people making NFL picks.

The problem here, of course, is the uncertainty at QB. The Bears run the ball well and they play good defense, but they do put a lot on Cutler’s shoulders. He is counted on to get the ball out quickly. If the new QB is unable to do that, it could be a long day for the Chicago offense. Still, can they muster enough to get by an Oakland team that has been up and down? That is the burning question for people making their NFL picks this week. All facts point to the fact that the Bears will still be tough, but they might not be able to survive this trip to the west coast.

Carson Palmer has been good for the Raiders over the last couple of weeks. It appears that this team is hitting its stride and it needs to keep winning if it wants to make the playoffs. I would expect the Raiders to come to play in this game, limiting Chicago’s run game. Though I don’t expect the Raiders to put up a ton of points, chances are that they will put up enough to get the win. As with all games in the NFL, though, the bigger trick will be covering a spread that is bigger than 3. This is hard to do in the NFL when the teams are relatively even. If you think the Bears can be competent on offense, then you will probably like them getting the points in this game.

College Football Picks – Auburn Tigers  vs Georgia Bulldogs

The Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs played one of the most physical, bruising games of 2010. Now they meet again, but the circumstances are very different this time around. The Tigers head east to take on UGA between the hedges. When they come into Samford Stadium to challenge a good Georgia team, one has to wonder what the Tigers will be able to do. The Dogs are 12.5 point favorites at most books, and the public is loading up on Auburn. Can the Tigers pull off an upset or will this be the type of game where Georgia rolls in a big way? That is the question that you and others will seek to answer as you make your college football picks this weekend.

The Auburn Tigers have been disappointing this season. They have gotten shoddy quarterback play and they haven’t been explosive, either. They have scored a depressing number of points and they’ve given up points, too. It all started in a loss at Clemson, but things have gotten worse since then. Their only good win on the road came against South Carolina in a strange game. They got blown out by Arkansas and they were dominated by LSU. So can this Auburn team compete with Georgia enough that is is worth your time and money to lay some college football picks on them?

With the way the line is set and the way it is moving, the simple answer is no. Georgia has a strong defense, a good quarterback, and a running game that will be bolstered by the return of Isaiah Crowell. UGA needs this game to stay on top in the SEC East and it looks like they will get it. They should have no trouble moving the football on Auburn and they will stop Auburn to some extent. This game should be interesting for a little while, but don’t be surprised if the Dogs end up running away with it. They could win this game by three touchdowns or even more if they get a couple of breaks. Make your free college football picks accordingly.

Football picksNovember 11, 2011

In the marquee matchup of the night, Oregon heads to Stanford for a rematch of what was one of the best games of 2010. The Ducks won big in Eugene, coming back from an 18-point first quarter hole to walk the dog on the Cardinal in the second. Jim Harbaugh watched helplessly as LaMichael James and company dominated all the way to the final whistle. Now, Stanford gets Oregon at home and it needs this win to keep itself in the national title hunt. The question for all of you making your college football picks is whether the Cardinal have the big guns to knock off a really good Oregon team.

First, you have to start by taking a hard look at Oregon. The Ducks are talented. We know this already. Somehow, though, they have flown under the radar since losing to LSU to begin the season. Since that time, they have destroyed every single opponent in their way. They are averaging, on the season, more than seven yards per rush. They are also playing really good defense. This is just overall a very tough team that is not getting the attention that it deserves. They come into this game as a 3.5 point underdog, too, so that should provide some incentive for the Ducks to get going.

Stanford has the best QB in the country, but it also has some question marks this week. The defense is missing some key pieces that will be needed to stop Oregon. The offense has some guys hurt, including the team’s best receiver. Will they have the guns to keep up with Oregon as the Ducks will certainly score points? That is the most interesting question of this game and it is the question that will ultimately determine the outcome. The betting on this game has been split right down the middle, so there is no real angle there. This one could go either way, so perhaps taking the points in what should be a battle is the best idea out there today.
