When the Pirates and Gamecocks get together in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, South Carolina will be slated as a 20.5 point favorite in college football picks. Giving up just less than three touchdowns, the Gamecocks seem like a lock to take down ECU in this game. But what about the spread? What can bettors expect out of this game? That is a good question and one that must be attacked from a number of different angles.

South Carolina has struggled out of the gate over the last few years, as they usually do their best work a month into the season. They also ended last year on a sour note, losing to Florida State in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. They do return arguably the best running back-wide receiver combo in the country and a defense with lots of good players. They should be good enough to score on ECU.

The number, however, is very large. It seems inviting and seems to give people an incentive to bet the already hyped gamecocks. That is an important thing to note and something to keep in mind for bettors. If you want to make money on college football betting this year, taking big, hyped favorites is probably not the best course of action. Think hard about taking the points here, especially if you can buy up to 21. This could be one of our free college football picks

In one of the most underrated games of the 2011 season, the TCU Horned Frogs will visit the Baylor Bears on a Friday night in Waco in what is to be great college football picks. TCU has made a habit of playing difficult competition, heading to venues like Clemson over the past couple of years. This time, they will tackle a difficult challenge in a Baylor team that returns a nice portion of its offense.

Baylor is led by Robert Griffin III, an athletic quarterback who is often asked to outrun the offensive line’s deficiency. Likewise, the Bears boast an ample running game. On offense, they shouldn’t run into too many problems scoring points.

The problem for Baylor is that the TCU defense should be very good once again. Though they are forced to replace a number of different starters on defense, TCU has been known to reload over the years. With head coach Gary Patterson at the helm, they have been one of the most impressive defensive teams in the country over the last four seasons.

TCU might struggle to score points, having replaced its NFL-bound quarterback and its best receiver. Still, the offense is hard to defend and TCU should have enough to win this Texas battle.

The Oregon Ducks and LSU Tigers will face off in what figures to be the most exciting game of opening weekend. The two teams will head to Dallas to play in Cowboys Stadium, a venue that should offer the perfect setting for a Labor Day matchup of heavy hitters. What should you expect in this game? It depends upon how much value you put on factors such as the distractions surrounding the LSU squad.

LSU returns a lot on both offense and defense and will look to recover from what was a somewhat disappointing season in 2010. The problem, of course, is that the LSU program is in turmoil. Many players, including starting QB Jordan Jefferson, were arrested in conjunction with a Baton Rouge fight. Jefferson won’t start on Monday and that could prove problematic for the Tigers. Though Oregon is not known for its defense, the Ducks have enough defense to present a challenge.

The Ducks are always good out of the gate, while LSU routinely struggles early in the season. Last year, the Tigers almost lost on opening weekend to a UNC team that played without most of its defense. The Ducks, meanwhile, have proven themselves able to pile up points in September. This is the kind of game where they might run away from LSU if the Tigers aren’t careful.

The Broncos are once again playing a difficult game to start the year. Facing off against a hungry Georgia team in Atlanta, they are walking into a difficult environment where few teams have beaten the Bulldogs. Still, the Broncos are well-versed on how to handle these tough spots. They beat Virginia Tech one year ago in an opening game and they’ve played well in bowl games, too.

This is a strange game, with the opening line pinning UGA as a field goal underdog in college football picks in what amounts to a home game for them. This could be one of the most surprising games on the docket, as well. The Dogs are athletic and they’re coming off of a difficult year. If they are ready to play, they could prove to be a live underdog in a game where Boise State must trek all the way across the country. This is one to keep your eye on for sure.

Last season, the Houston Cougars went to UCLA and got the doors blown off, losing a couple of quarterbacks in the process. This year, they will host the Bruins in downtown Houston and they’ll look to reclaim a little bit of pride. Always a difficult place to play, Houston has been a venue that has given CUSA teams fits over the years. Will it give the PAC-10’s Bruins the same kind of difficulty?

The big question here is how well Houston quarterback Case Keenum bounces back from his season-ending knee injury. With Keenum at the helm, the Cougars are one of the most dynamic offenses in the country. Slotted as a three point favorite  in college football picks over the Bruins, this could be one of those games where the public loads up on the road underdog, only to watch the Cougars run away in a high flying type of game.

The Aggies of Utah State come calling and open as just worse than a three touchdown underdog at defending national champion Auburn. How will the Tigers look one year after winning it all and without the services of Cam Newton? That is the big question that remains mostly unanswered heading into the new year. One thing is for sure and that is that Auburn still has plenty of weapons.

The Tigers still boast a dynamic backfield and a fleet of good receivers. Though they’ve lost a lot on defense, Auburn should still be formidable. The problem with this game is that the 22-point line looks like a trap. In a home game to open the year, many people expect the Tigers to blow the doors off of the mostly unknown Utah State squad. That might not be the case, though, and this game could be closer than many are expecting.
