Horse Racing Line - May 02, 2012This Saturday is the Kentucky Derby and we'll be publishing a Special Edition Racing Newsletter on late Friday afternoon. The "sheet" will have a total of six races from Churchill Downs, including the "Derby" and five other races (mostly stakes) from the big under-card. Pre-order our Kentucky Derby sheet here for $29 and get it in your hands as soon as it is released. Last year our top pick finished second in a 20-horse field and an exacta box with our third choice returned a whopping $356.00. Tuesday's East Coast Results: Betfair Hollywood Park is "dark" until tomorrow, so today we have a 4 spot from Evangeline Downs in Louisiana where their first race goes off at 3:40 pm Pacific. Tuesday's West Coast Results:
![]() Today's Picks: Top pick: #1 (LIGNITE) - One of two fillies entered by 2yo specialist Wesley Ward and the pair will race uncoupled. This $35K yearling purchase finished 2nd when debuting at Keeneland at this distance April 13th. She had worked fast on real dirt before coming to Kentucky and she has the rail. 2nd pick: #3 (Quiet Success) - Heavily bet in her debut, she broke slowly and rallied from between runners to finish 3rd. Daughter of "Successful Appeal" has a new trainer (Tom Amoss 30% with new arrivals) and he adds lasix for this attempt. Filly had a nice half-mile breeze on this surface April 26th. 3rd pick: #4 (Sweet Shirley Mae) - The 2nd of the Ward fillies is a debuting daughter of "Broke Vow" who was initially prepared at Palm Meadows in Florida before shipping to Kentucky. Working nicely at both locales and Ward wins at a solid 27% clip first out. 4th pick: #5 (All Day Donna) - Grey filly showed some speed in her debut and tired during the stretch run to finish 4th, a 1/2 length back of "Success". Can factor, but needs to step it up today. EVANGELINE DOWNS Race #1 at 6:40 PM Eastern Top pick: #2 (BURKE'S BROOK) - He's been in a couple of very good barns (Tony Dutrow & Al Stall Jr.), and has shown some ability. Grey colt by "Rockport Harbor" races off a private sale to owner/trainer Tony Constantine and can take this with his best. 2nd pick: #6 (Silverlanes Deputy) - Gelding by "Silver Deputy" hasn't run since last June when he raced evenly at Louisiana Downs facing Special weights. Training nicely for his return, 5yo had a sharp work here going 5 furlongs April 20th. 3rd pick: #7 (Kayou) - The main speed, he set the pace and tired badly racing for twice this price on the Fair Grounds turf March 8th and has been on the sidelines for the past two months. He finished 2nd there on the dirt Jan 19th and a repeat of that effort makes him a win candidate. 4th pick: #1 (Whams Nite Out) - Longshot has the rail and will drop in price, stretch-out in distance, and race 3rd back off a 10 month layoff. Think he'll be competitive at "juicy" odds.
