Horse Racing Tracks - April 28, 2012Churchill Downs opens its spring/summer meet today with a twilight card (first post 6:00 pm Eastern). The Kentucky Derby(G1) is only one week away and we'll have a Special Racing Newsletter that day with the "Run For the Roses" and five other races from Louisville on their stakes filled under-card. It will be available for purchase late on Friday afternoon. At this point it looks like a full field of 20 will once again line up in Kentucky, with the undefeated Gemologist, the fast developing Bodemeister, and last years' top two 2yo's Hansel and Union Rags among the major contenders. Today we have two races from Belmont Park (which opened yesterday) and three from that early evening card at Churchill Downs, including the $200,000 Derby Trial Stakes(G3). Friday's East Coast Results: Next Saturday is the Kentucky Derby(G1) and we'll be publishing a Special Edition Racing Newsletter with a total of six races including the "Run For the Roses" and five other races (mostly stakes) on the big undercard. It will be available for purchase late on Friday. Today we have four races from Betfair Hollywood Park, all California-bred stakes races on the annual "California Gold Rush" card. A note for our racing fans, Hollywood Park is now known as Betfair Hollywood Park and unfortunately is listed as such on the Racing Forms and other web-sites. We don't normally like listing sponsorships, but since it's officially listed as such, so we'll comply. Friday's West Coast Results:
 Today's Picks: Top pick: #6 (STONECOLDSTEAMER) - Nice debut saw this colt involved from start to finish sprinting at Aqueduct on March 22nd and hang on stubbornly to get beaten a neck. Trainer Rick Dutrow scratched him out of a turf sprint yesterday to await this one mile dirt race and Dominguez climbs aboard this afternoon. He and Dutrow click at a 32% rtae over the past 18 months when teamed-up. 2nd pick: #8 (Readbytheline) - He had a terrible trip last out as the favorite at Aqueduct and could only finish an even 4th. Gelding by "Read the Footnotes" stretches out in distance and is working fast, presumably with the blinkers that he wear today. Major factor. 3rd pick: #5 (The Kenosha Kid) - He's raced evenly in both sprints to date and improved his "figure" noticeably in his 2nd start. Very dangerous barn (Chris Englehart) will stretch this gelding by "Bwana Charlie" out in distance for the first time. 4th pick: #4 (Pearl of Wisdom) - Gelding moves back to the dirt after racing evenly while very wide last out in a two-turn grass contest at Aqueduct. J.J. Castellano replaces Dave Cohen and trainer Carlos Martin adds the "hood". BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK Race #3 (THE B. THOUGHTFUL STAKES) at 5:00 PM Eastern Top pick: #7 (HALO DOLLY) - Very consistent filly(16-9-3-1) has been well-managed by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and enters this off an allowance win at Golden Gate Fields on April 6th, her first start since late January. That should set this professional speed/stalker up perfectly for this and the jockey with the most wins in North American history(Russell Baze) is in for the ride. The legendary rider/trainer combo is winning at a 31% clip over the past 18 months. 2nd pick: #2 (Going For a Spin) - Veteran was re-claimed by Mike Mitchell and he had to pay $7000 more than he lost her for. She was a stakes winner a year ago here on the 2011 "Gold Rush" day and is (8-2-2-1) overall on synthetic surfaces. Dangerous rival. 3rd pick: #8 (A Jealous Woman) - Hard-hitting mare(12-5-2-3) has had all of her success on the grass, but she did finish 2nd on this surface when debutin back in July of 2009. Speed/stalker draws a nice outside post for this trip and comes into this off a narrow loss facing "open" company in a Santa Anita stakes April 7th. 4th pick: #5 (Sister Kate) - She's an uncoupled stable-mate of "Dolly" and this lightly raced grey daughter of "Benchmark" will be racing beyond 6 furlongs for the first time. She's 3 for 5 overall and has plenty of early speed.
