Handicapping The Preakness - April 25, 2012
Belmont doesn't open until Friday, so today we have a pair of races from both Keeneland and Tampa Bay Downs, and tomorrow we'll have four from Keeneland.
Tuesday's East Coast Results:
We erred yesterday when we stated that Hollywood doesn't open until Friday. The big track in Englewood is back in business tomorrow and it will be the focus of our West Coast Racing Newsletter every day it has a "live" card.
Today we're in the Louisiana bayou with four races from Evangeline Downs where the first post is 3:40 Pacific.
Tuesday's West Coast Results:
Top pick: #4 (JOANN'S BULLET) - Improving colt finished 2nd two back at this price in his first back off a brief rest, then last out he finished and even 3rd. Trainer Brenda McCarthy brings him back in 12 days for this attempt and the hottest rider on the grounds (Dan Centeno) stays aboard.
2nd pick: #3 (Myles) - Dangerous foe drops out of special weight contests and trainer Wayne Catalano will shorten him up in distance and switch him from turf to dirt. Son of "War Chant" has ability and comes off a career best on April 13th.
3rd pick: #2 (Roman Classic) - His trainer (Bill Phipps) had an impressive first time starter win here the other day and this colt by "Roman Ruler" has a pair of sharp recent half-mile works on view. Home-bred is a threat if ready.
EVANGELINE DOWNS Race #1 at 6:40 PM Eastern
Top pick: #4 (PROPER ROMAS) - Improving, lightly raced, and well-bred filly has come back off a 7 week break a better horse. She finished 2nd two back at this price and distance at Delta Downs and last out at the Fair Grounds she did well to finish 5th despite a very "troubled" trip. Looks set in her local debut to get her maiden win.
2nd pick: #7 (Tiffany Blue) - Another who's well-bred and this New York foal by "Dehere" cost $75K as a yearling back in 2009. In a good barn (Mike Stidham) to begin her career, she was claimed on Feb 11th at the Fair Grounds for $12.5K. Can factor with her best.
3rd pick: #3 (Littlebitspirit) - The fields most experienced runner, she' started eight times during the long meet at the Fair Grounds and was competitive in half of thise. The type that can "run all day" and she could grab a slice at a big price
4th pick: #8 (Short' n Curly) - Her best race to date came in her most recent when she chased and held to finish 3rd at the Fair Grounds. Race was her first ever around two-turns and a repeat of it makes her a factor
